A major project in Kolwezi: the first double road interchange in the DR Congo
Construction is scheduled to begin in 2025 on a landmark infrastructure that will transform Kolwezi’s urban landscape: the first double road interchange in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Strategically located at the Mwangeji roundabout — the intersection of Lumumba Avenue, LDK Avenue, Mandradele Avenue and National Road 39 — this project aims to ease increasingly heavy traffic in a rapidly growing city.
Kolwezi’s fast-paced growth, driven by the mining industry, has led to a sharp increase in mobility needs, both for residents and for economic flows. In this context, the construction of this double interchange represents a decisive step forward in improving traffic flow, reducing congestion, and ensuring safer journeys.
The project will be carried out by two flagship companies of the Groupe Forrest :
-
EGMF (Entreprise Générale Malta Forrest), esponsible for the design and construction,
-
Congo Energy, in charge of installing 100% solar-powered lighting.
This partnership has already proven its capabilities in Kolwezi. Together, they built the city’s first interchange — the second in the country — located near the airport. This structure was inaugurated in June 2025 by the President of the Republic, Felix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, marking an important milestone in the modernization of urban infrastructure.
The upcoming Mwangeji double interchange will feature:
-
5 bridges and multiple connecting ramps to existing avenues,
-
Nearly 3.5 km of roads with varying lane configurations,
-
Over 240 solar-powered streetlights distributed across the bridges, roundabout, and connecting ramps,
-
A symbolic landmark structure, reflecting the city’s forward-looking vision.
Beyond its technical achievement, this interchange reflects the ambition to equip Kolwezi with modern infrastructure tailored to the needs of a dynamic provincial capital. It is part of the Forrest Group’s ongoing commitment to support the region’s growth and improve the quality of life for all road users.
By connecting major routes more efficiently and reducing travel times, the Mwangeji double interchange will become a key driver of development for Kolwezi and the entire Lualaba province.
